URGENT: ACTION NEEDED IN SUPPORT OF CASP!

Dear Parents, Guardians, and Friends of CASP:

I am writing to share a concern that could potentially impact every child who participates in the Community After School Program.  CASP received an email from the CEO of the America’s Service Commissions (ASC) regarding the possibility of funding for AmeriCorps and Senior Corps being eliminated in FY2018. Here is an excerpt from their email:

“On Friday, February 17, the New York Times reported that the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), the federal agency that supports the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs, has been included on a list of federal agencies to be eliminated in the FY 2018 federal budget.”

You may be wondering how this information relates to CASP and to your child(ren). It boils down to this: AmeriCorps members are the reason CASP is able to offer Homework Club, 1:1 Literacy Tutoring, and Health & Nutrition Programming. In 2007, AmeriCorps members worked with CASP officials to develop both the Be Fit and Be Smart Clubs. Without these service members these programs would not exist. Without funding, the AmeriCorps program will go away, and with it our homework, tutoring, and health and nutrition programs. It is imperative, for the continued health and growth of CASP and hundreds of other health and human service organizations, that the AmeriCorps program is funded.

I hope you will take a moment to reach out to your representatives and let them know you support the continued funding of AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs. Please let them know the positive difference the AmeriCorps program has made in your child(ren’s) life through these enriching programs at the Community After School Program of Norman.

The Labor, Health & Human Services, Education and Related Agencies Subcommittee is responsible for determining funding for the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS), which in turn funds the AmeriCorps and Senior Corps programs.
